A2A for Biodiversity
Article 2 of the Convention on biological diversity (93/626/EEC) defines biodiversity as follows «Biological diversity means the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.
The improvement of the quality of life of human beings, obtained by means of economic and social progress, has often caused as a consequence a negative effect on biological variety.
In the thoughtless exploitation of territory and the ever-growing impact that this has had on climatic changes, the European Union has recognised one of the gravest threats to biodiversity.
By interfering with the natural habitat, man is the common cause of this compounded threat: many of our actions make a daily impact on ecosystems.
To tackle this situation, the UN General Assembly has proclaimed 2010 as the “International Year of Biodiversity” drawing the whole world’s attention to the problem of environmental impoverishment of the planet caused by the destruction of ecosystems. The declared objective is to halt the loss of biological variety and to maintain intact the functioning of natural ecosystems both for their intrinsic value and also for the benefits and services that these can provide to mankind.
A2A, in line with its objective of sustainable development, has decided for some time to espouse the cause of safeguarding biodiversity, crusading for clean air in the city, for the production of sustainable energy and reducing CO2 emissions. An ongoing commitment to find the balance between the requirements of territorial exploitation and those to preserve biological variety and the protection of ecosystems.
Biodiversity is life. Safeguarding it is our duty.
